About the Conference

Tongji University, in collaboration with the International Water Association (IWA), are hosting the 2019 Innovation Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery.

With the population growth and economic development, eutrophication has become a major problem in waterbodies around the world, and nutrient is a key factor resulting in this. Thus, nutrient removal has become one of the key challenges for wastewater treatment facilities. In addition to removal, nutrient recovery from wastewater is providing sustainable paths within a treatment plant. As the paradigm includes circular carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus approaches, new research and practice are needed to discover and to implement innovative technologies that make up such circular approaches. The conference will be an international meeting point for scientists, engineers, managers, and entrepreneurs. It will provide an opportunity to review and assess innovation, research, engineering and management practices on nutrient removal and resource recovery for the past years, and inspire new generation of wastewater treatment process. Aiming at this, 2019 IWA Innovation Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery will be held in Shanghai, China over 25-28 November 2019.

From the Chair of IWA NRR Specialist Group

The tremendous progress in the development of nutrient removal regulations and innovative wastewater treatment applications in China has demonstrated how a single country can make great strides and have a global impact. The wastewater characteristics and technology needs of China are unique compared to other parts of the world necessitating unique solutions. IWA is keenly aware that we need to engage with experts from China and from all over the world to generate cross-flow of research, technology and resulting opportunities. There are several key technological needs for China that will be topics for consideration at our IWA conference in Shanghai: new approaches for treating low carbon:nitrogen wastewater, new more efficient nutrient polishing technologies, new approaches for combining nutrient removing technologies and water reuse, and new approaches for embedding nutrient recovery within treatment plant design.

The broader backdrop for this event is the important contributions of research and development from China during the last decade and its impact on a global scale. The philosophy of the leading Chinese universities to organise science summit series together with IWA reflects the high mutual respect but also the conviction that international co-operation results in improved productivity. The close relationship between progress in scientific research and the development of efficient technology applications is a core asset of IWA. Urban water management should be integrated with other disciplines and comprise all water users and stakeholders. This conference brings academics and practitioners together to discuss innovative technologies and approaches for sustainable wastewater treatment plant design.

Dr. Sudhir Murthy

Senior Vice President IWA

Chair, IWA Innovators Platform

Chair, IWA Nutrient Removal and Recovery Specialist Group

Welcome from Chair of 2019 Innovation Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery. We sincerely invite submissions of extended abstracts for this exciting event.

The Program Committee is calling for submissions of high-quality, original and previously unpublished research in the theory, practice, and application of sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery. The conference will focus on both fundamental and applied research, and applications of technologies in designing, operation, modelling, and optimization of wastewater treatment systems.

We look forward to your contribution to this exciting event.
